The wreck of the U.S. Navy destroyer that sunk during World War II was found at the depth of nearly 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) deep off the coast of the Philippines.

According to the announcement of the US research team, which made the discovery, it is the deepest shipwreck ever found in the world. The USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413) was hit and sunk during the Battle off of Samar on October 25, 1944, as US forces fought to liberate the Philippines (a US colony then) from Japanese occupation.

The submersible with experts dived into the deep for filming, photographing and examining the Sammy B's broken hull, during a series of eight-day dives this month, according to the company Caladan Oceanic, dedicated to the undersea technologies and deep-diving expeditions.

The images revealed the ship's three-barrel torpedo launcher and cannon mount.
